 Recently I had the pleasure of talking to model Ashton Shane. Ashton Shane was fun to interview due to the fact that she was an interesting person and had an interesting outlook on life and specifically on the topic of modeling. One of the things I found the most interesting about her was the fact that she is not a very tall model, like the majority of other models. Measuring in at 5'5, she manages to be very a successful model, even though she is not 5'10 or up. Shane says, "I know how to market myself, I know what I can do and what I am good at, so I go for the modeling jobs in my range. Being able to know what you can market is a very important skill for models."
Ashton Shane became involved in modeling against her own will in the beginning. She was forced into it by her aunt who was a plus sized model, who then opened up her own modeling agency, and Ashton was her "Guinea Pig". She did a myriad of modeling activities because of her aunt and mom making her do it. She said she hated it, as soon as she got in front of the camera she started crying. When Shane got in to High School she became more fond of modeling. She got involved in local television as a video jockey, VJ, and doing other local television segments. While working for these local TV stations interviewing local artists she really did not get paid money, instead the man she worked for, filmed her demo tapes which can be quite costly, which to this day, she remains in touch with the man she worked for. When she was working in a gym she heard about the Hawaiian Tropic competitions, and got interested. For two years she was asked to compete in the regional contests and she said no, then finally she gave in and and decided to try. To her surprise she was successful at it!
Although she was a cheerleader in High School she never really understood sports, and currently she does not really even enjoy sports that much. She did say she will always root for her home state of Florida no matter what, but from time to time she does enjoy Basketball. "I don't have any favorites, I just like them all." Boy oh boy that takes a lot of the fun out of a good sports game!
When Ashton Shane was doing the Hawaiian Tropic events they aways asked one question which was, in three words, describe your personality. She said that she always chose the same three words to describe herself. Gregarious, which is really to be social, or enjoy the company of others. Ambitious, "I would have never made it if I was not ambitious enough." And finally, funky. "Everybody has a certain amount of spunk in them, it just varies from person to person, but I would say I am a pretty spunky."
An interesting thing about Ashton Shane is the fact that she seems to get more work without an agent or an agency. Some of her larger deals she managed to wrangle herself without help from anyone else, like Sharper Image being one of them. That kind of independence and confidence in the business of modeling is hard to come by, and when you do find it,it is a pretty spectacular find!
She has never appeared topless and never will. She has tried to also do poses were it seems like she is implying something or leaving the door open for interpretation, but it just isn't for her. "When I started do doing modeling, I promised my family that I would never do things like topless poses or appear nude in magazines. I'm usually ok with most suff, but I will not do anything with nude people in it. I also tried doing poses were it seems like I am implying something, but it just isn't for me, in fact when I was in Maxim's Home Town Hotties contest I was sort of glad to get eliminated out of it because it did not feel right to me."
Her list of employers and magazines she has appeared in is pretty long, to name a few she has worked for Health Magazine, Cooking Light, Sharper Image, Neutrogena, FHM, Super Models Unlimited, DUB Magazine, Logitec, and many more. She has also appeared in many commercials, a few movies, infomercials, and almost anything else like that you can think of. She has also walked such Runways as Macys, Valentine's Pajama Show, Zeny's Boutique, HardNox, Summer Concert and Swimsuit Fashion Show and many more.
For the future of Shane's career, she wishes to keep on track with what she has been doing, she wants to keep doing catalogs, editorials for magazines, being an extra in films and stuff like that, maybe do an issue of Maxim Magazine, maybe. For the past two years Maxim has wanted her to appear in their magazine, but there has always been a conflict for Maxim, and they have had to back out of the shoot. She is expecting that same call this year. She hopes that one day maybe she could even get to do some hosting type jobs, were people watching can get to see her be more natural and were she can improvise a bit more.
