I am sure by now you have heard of the scandal that Miss South Carolina got herself into. If you are anything like me I am sure you are wondering how many of the Miss (Teen, USA, America, Universe) scandals we are going to encounter next year. It has been hard to keep count of all of the controversies regarding the pageants, but I believe this is number four. When Miss South Carolina Lauren Caitlin Upton was posed with the question, "Why can't 1/5 of Americans locate America on a map?" she let out of the most incoherent answer that was ever given on national television.
The clip of Lauren Caitlin Upton answering the head-scratcher of a question in the Miss Teen USA pageant almost immediately went up onto Youtube, and within five days of her embarrassing moment the answer has been viewed over 9 million times! She is now a household name all across of America and probably around the world. This past week, Tuesday, Upton was given the chance to re-answer the question she was given in the pageant on the Today Show. Her revised answer was needless to say, much better (her first answer was so awful it was hard to do any worse!). She answered, "Well personally, my friends and I, we know exactly where the United States is on our map. I don't know anyone else who doesn't. And if the statistics are correct, I believe there should be more emphasis on geography." LOL, after her display of stupidity, I doubt she even knows where the United States is on a map, let alone the fact that she even owns a map! When asked why can't 20 percent of Americans find America on a map gave an answer that we are sure to remember for a while. When thinking about the question, it is hard to come off patriotic, and at the same time say that American public schools can sometimes suck, and no child left behind is a joke. I know, that where I live, children miss way more then the minimal amount (Some tend to miss 100+ days out of a possible 25) and still get passed, maybe Miss South Carolina is one of those children, but who knows, point is, when faced with the question she was given, she completely dropped the ball and gave an unbelievably stupid answer. Then again, our we really tuning in to the pageant to see who is the smartest? |
